Core Approach

IDE’s development strategy is based on the notion that poor rural families can and will invest for their own well-being. IDE treats poor people as customers rather than recipients of charity.

In its 20 years of experience worldwide and 11 years of experience in Vietnam, IDE has developed a set of successful market-based approaches to increase the range of beneficial products and services available in poor rural areas. IDE’s core approach is to stimulate both demand and supply for techniques and technologies appropriate for small farms and rural households. IDE:

Establishes and strengthens the grassroots private sector – small, largely informal local enterprises – to provide the agricultural inputs, household water and sanitation products, information, and services rural families need to increase the profitability of their small farms and improve family health.

Designs and conducts commercial-quality rural mass marketing campaigns to build demand for agricultural techniques, inputs, and services and water supply and sanitation products and services to the level where the grassroots private sector can profitably provide these products to small farm families.

Whilst IDE is a non-profit organization, its projects are implemented through profitable and sustainable small and micro enterprises, growing with the trend of economic liberalization in Vietnam
